The Vasai Taluka Parsee Panchayat Charitable Trust is now sponsoring medical aid

Diabetes meds at 40% discount on MRP.
Cancer and Dialysis medicines at 30% discount on MRP.
AIDS meds are excluded and no discount can be given.

The above facility is mainly open to financially challenged senior citizens and others whose family income does not exceed Rs.12,000/- per month.

The candidate must register his/her name with the trust along with the following documents:

Ration Card copy.
Salary certificate/letter where employed.
Details of all family members.
Doctor’s prescription for medicines.
List of medicines required per month (list must contain the following – medicine name, manufacturer’s name, MRP, quantity required per month)

No aid will be given unless all documentary proof is provided by the patient or his/her relative/guardian.

Dr Motibai Kapadia (1867-1930), Gujarat’s first lady doctor who treated sexism and untouchability

Motibai was born to an affluent Parsi family of Bombay and was brought up in that city. She was the first woman to pass out from the Grant Medical College. The year she qualified as a doctor, industrialist Ranchhodlal Chhotalal founded a hospital for women in Ahmedabad. He invited Motibai to head the hospital – the Victoria Jubilee Hospital. She accepted the offer and worked there for the next four decades. The British government later conferred the ‘Kaisar-e-Hind’ title on her for her contributions.

Motibai was not only the first lady doctor in Gujarat, but also a social reformer.

The Parsee Fire Temple on Queen’s Road, consecrated in February 1926, is a rare Iranian-style architecture in the city. The connection of Parsees, who worship nature, with India dates back to the 9th century and Bangalore accepted a section of them, allowing them to keep their traditions and customs alive.

“For a small and fast depleting community like the Parsees, there are hardly 700 community members in Bangalore,” says Bangalore Parsee Zoroastrian Anjuman Trustee member and chartered accountant Yezdi N Unvalla.

The Zoroastrian Return to Roots Inaugural Tour

This tour will run from Dec 27th, 2013-Jan 8th, 2014.

The World Zoroastrian Congress will be held Dec 27th-Dec 30th.

After the Congress, Return to Roots’ participants will tour Zoroastrian Gujarat and Bombay, with world-renowned experts explaining the cultural, economic, and/or religious significance of the places being visited. Participants are expected to attend all days of the Program.

For the inaugural trip they are accepting applications from people between the ages of 25 and 35. However consider applying even if you fall outside of the suggested age range.

For the first trip, they are only taking Zoroastrians who live outside of India — holders of an Indian passport but living outside of India, are also eligible.

Please note that for this inaugural trip, since you will be visiting Agiaries and Atash Behrams in India. In deference to the rules in place at these religious institutions, all participants require to meet the following conditions:

1.All participants must be of patrilineal descent. This means your father must be Zoroastrian.

2.All participants must have had their navjotes performed by a recognized and ordained priest.

3.Participants cannot claim the faith of another religion in conjunction with Zoroastrianism.

In the short future, they will offer tours where you will not be visiting Agiaries and Atash Behrams. Anyone interested in learning more about the Zoroastrian community will be eligible to come on the future tours.

Villie M. Appoo gets a distinguished award

Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois CEO Villie M. Appoo received a Distinguished Alumni award from Washington University’s G. W. Brown School of Social Work at a ceremony April 17 at Steinberg Auditorium here.

Born in Mumbai, Appoo, of the Zoroastrian faith, joined the Girl Guides in first grade and was active for 11 years. Her Girl Guide troop participated in many community service projects including volunteering with the Society for the Education of the Crippled. This early exposure to service sparked her interest in social service.

“When I came to the United States from India 37 years ago, I did not know anyone in this country and chose Brown School of Social Work from a list of the top ten schools of social work in the U.S.,” Appoo stated in a press release.

Parsis Shine at the Masters National Athletic Meet

Khurshid Mistry and Rohinton Mehta have done it again in the athletics arena. This time, Khurshid and Rohinton represented Maharashtra for the Masters National Athletic Championship held at Trivandrum from May 10 to 12, 2013. Around 1500 athletes from all states in India participated in the national athletic meet.

Khurshid and Rohinton have excelled in their performances at the Nationals. Khurshid has bagged 4 Gold Medals in 100 mts, 200 mts, 400 mts and 4*100 mts relay and Rohinton has won 3 Gold Medals in 800 mts, 400 mts and 400 mts hurdles.

Earlier in the month of February 2013, both the Veteran athletes had represented Mumbai for the Maharashtra State Masters Athletic Meet, held at Nasik where Khurshid had won 3 Gold Medals in 100 mts, 200 mts and 400 mts and Rohinton had won a Gold Medal in 800 mts and both of them were selected for the National Athletic Meet.

Besides Sprinting wherein Khurshid has won a number of accolades she has also proved her mettle in the Marathons. She has won Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon 2013-Half Marathon and Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon 2012-Half Marathon in 3^rd position under the Veteran category. Sprinting and Marathon require a different set of skills and training routines.

Rohinton Mehta has won a number of athletic championships including the World Masters Games in Sydney in 2009.

Both, Khurshid and Rohinton train at Priya Darshani Park under their coach Dinanath Maurya.

Khurshid is working as an Associate Vice President at UTI Mutual Fund and Rohinton works with ITC Ltd as Associate General Counsel.

On her achievement Khurshid said, “Sports has always been my fevor. Elation, exhilaration and a sense of achievement are the stimulants that drive me to achieve my goals. The euphoria of overcoming one’s limitations and setbacks (which are many along the path) and emerging a winner is inexplicable. This drives me to stretch myself, set new goals and strive to achieve them. Sports has made me physically fitter and mentally more active. I enjoy my training sessions and look forward to them. “

Rohinton on his achievement said, ”The track was very fast and in good shape and the competition was tough. Both my races i.e.800 mtrs and 400 mtrs were massed starts and I used the same technique paced them throughout and kicked 120-140 mtrs from home”.

Little did my family know that I had heard about Mahyar since 2009 as he was interviewed in

Amordad and Beresad in Iran because he had produced a music album titled : YEK (One).

What got my attention about Mahyar is not just his talent in music but also his deep affection for our Zarathushti faith, tradition and heritage. This inspired me to conduct an interview with the hope that you will support his work and aspirations with a Zarathushti gusto.
