Subject: URGENT APPEAL FROM PARSEE ANJUMAN OOTY

My dear fellow Zoroastrians,

First of all, a belated Navroze mubarak to you all.

I am sure that a lot of you, know  of the Parsee Zoroastrian Anjuman in Ooty (The Nilgiris, Tamil Nadu). For those of you who don’t,it is one of the oldest Anjumans in South India, dating back to 1847.This Anjuman serves the entire Zoroastrian community, South of Madras.

A lot of our land had been grabbed due to in-complete fencing. We are still fighting the case, which has proved to be a financial drainer to the Anjuman. At the same time, we also constructed a boundary wall around the property, which again depleted our already dwindling finances. The Zoroastrian population has dwindled considerably as well.  As a result, our annual subscription though raised, has proved to be in-sufficient.

I now appeal to you all, to contribute generously to the Anjuman.  If each of us could contribute something, we should be able to give a new lease of financial life to our beloved Anjuman.

Please show your Zoroastrian generosity now, to render this help. I suggested the idea to post this e-mail on this group, with the certainty that our community would definitely rise to the occasion.

Please send your generous contributions via cheque, or demand-draft  to :
PARSEE ZOROASTRIAN ANJUMAN,

Looking forward to your most generous contributions.

Regards,
Navroze Sethna.

Nowruz Parade 2010 in windy Chicago

You will enjoy the above front page of “The Zarathushti Times” (sic!) created by Bejan Irani showing the Zarathushti participation in Chicago’s first Persian Parade.

Four brave Zoroastrians (Keikhosrow Mobed, Jim Engineer, Bejan Irani and Rohinton Rivetna) bearing Zoroastrian banners, were among the 300 or so parade participants that faced the bitter cold, and blowing rain, snow and wind that howled through downtown Chicago on March 20th, heralding Nowruz!  While no match to the popular NY Persian Parade, this was a great first-time effort organized by a Persian group in Chicago.

Several Zarathushtis (Tenaz Sevak, Rashna Ghadialy and others) also participated with a Zoroastrian table set up at the Persian Festival held every year at Navy Pier in Chicago.

 Happy Nowruz!

Roshan Rivetna

Tower of Silence

Attached are some articles from the Times of London from 1905 — conversation between the George Birdwood, a British official who was well-known amongst the Bombay Parsis (and a good friend of Dadabhai Naoroji), and the Parsi scholar and writer R.P. Karkaria.  The term seems to either have had its origin with an Irish who worked in the Bombay government or, possibly, a “Mrs. Postans” who wrote a travelogue about her times in western India in 1838 (an interesting read — in the book she talks about a very bright young boy in school, the same Dadabhai Naoroji!).

Jivanji Modi (The Religious Ceremonies and Customs of the Parsees) suggests that the phrase “Towers of Silence” derives in part from the use of the word “khamosh” (silent) in association with the dead (p. 67, footnote).

Davier Agiary

PTA   THE BOMBAY SAMACHAR 28/03/ 2010
Davier Agiary

Sir,

With the blessings of our fellow Zoroastrian brothers and sisters, we were able to complete the following tasks:

1) Complete renovation of the Agiary.

2) Construction of the resident room for the Dasturji.

3) Installation of boring pump.

4) Installation of water taps to wash hands before the Kusti prayers.

5) Making of the ladies Kusti room.

6) Construction of roof for the dharamshala.

7) Making of toilets.

Hence we look upon the Parsee community, well known for its charity to donate generously towards the maintenance of our Sacred Fire, Kathi Fund, Mobed Nibhav and also to provide the basic amenities required to organise Ghambar (community lunch) of this magnitude on the Anniversary day of this Davier Fire.

Cheques may be drawn in favour of “Davier Parsi Zarthosti Anjuman Fund” at Davier, via Umargaon, Dist.Valsad.

Yours truly,

Pervez Mistry
