What to pray during Muktad days

By Pervin Mistry

It is often asked as to what one should pray during the ‘Muktad’ days. It is requisite that we pray the daily farajiyat prayers and then pray the Patet Raven-ni Naiyate; Satum-no Kardo or, “Karda to be recited in memory of the Departed Ones” (as given in the English version); Sarosh Yasht Hadokht (during the day) or Sarosh Yasht Vadi (night time).

It is also a practice to recite the Baj of 1200 Ashem Vohu for the first 5 days, i.e. from Ashtad to Mino Aneran roj and to recite the Baj of 1200 Yatha Ahu Vairyo on the 5 Gatha days.  In addition, it is highly recommended that at least for the 10 Muktad days, we pray the Framroat-no Ha, which is Yasna 20, the Avestan Commentary on the Ashem Vohu Prayer. The following is an explanation of Yasna 20.

  • Thank you for posting the muktad prayers. I was a little confused whether to pray the patet ravani or only satum. Could you please also explain to me in Patet Ravani they ask for names many times,, some places its falan bin falan and others khud falan? How do I recite the name? Should we say behdin ..behdin or only behdin or behdin..rao(as we do in tandarosti). Would very much appreciate your reply.

  • Thank you for the wonderful write up. However there is some confusion for Patet Raven-ni as it should not be prayed for these 10 days.
Patet is the prayer for repentance where as during Muktad days the souls come down to Geti for nourishment through Manthras and prayers.
However Patet Pashemani should be prayed in Ushahin Gah of Vahishtoisht Gatha..

Please clarify if 1500 Ashem’s are to be prayed every day or a total should sum to 1500 in 5 days.

  • Patet Ravan-ni cannot be prayed during 10 days of Muktad. This holds true for Fasal muktads too. Patet Pashemani can be prayed anytime, not necessarily only on Vahishtoish gatha. The way we Parsis lead our lives we should be praying the Patet Pashemani quite often. In Patet Ravan-ni the names should be recited as in Satum no kardo and the same name should be recited in the same manner after “khud”.
For answers to all these questions and more please refer to the book – “Dharmik jindagi gujarvana Jarthosti kaydao” by Bamanji Burjorji Rivetna”

Thank you for the clarification. I was confused about the falan names in patet ravani. So to say the name for falan should be exactly as in satum..behdin…behdin?? and khud falan is the who who is praying..Am I right? Would very much appreciate your reply.

  • Can anyone let me know which is the Baj prayer to recited during the muktad day’s, is it just one prayer or it changes during the last five gatha day’s, if so please also let me know. Unfortunately am not good in reading or writing Gujerati, would be very much grateful if there is a pdf format of the Baj prayer’s to be recited during Muktad day’s. Am an NRI, want to teach my children the best of our religion with no stone unturned, wherever we may be.

  • Why there is a formation of 3 different calenders .
Why there are kadmi and shenshai atashbehrams and agiaries.
Why are we not following the sub castism
Why do we have 18 day muktad ceremony.
Why there are 5 wada dasturs ins5ead of one and why there are no exams for wada dastoor.

  • Farokh Keki Pestonji

Very true. Why such a difference?
Can anyone tell us all why such things are going on.

  • Does anyone have an electronic copy of pater ravani?
    Please share
