Parsi Charity and Philanthropy

Parsi Thy Name Is Charity

By Noshir H. Dadrawala

“Parsi, thy name is charity” is a common expression that probably traces its roots to the time of the British Raj. No less a person than Mahatma Gandhi has acknowledged, “I am proud of my country, India, for having produced the splendid Zoroastrian stock, in numbers beneath contempt, but in charity and philanthropy, perhaps unequalled, certainly unsurpassed.”

The driving force behind a Parsi’s charitable instinct is his religious ethos. From a religious point of view, Parsis consider poverty, suffering and want as an affliction of evil. To remove poverty, disease and suffering is not only a religious duty, but an act of spiritual merit, depriving “evil” of sustenance. If Christ asked his followers to love their neighbours, Zarathushtra asked his followers to attain happiness by making others happy. (Yasna 43.1)

Monumental Encyclopedia of Iran

A Lifetime Quest to Finish a Monumental Encyclopedia of Iran

By

Ralph Ellison wrote for 40 years without finishing his novel “Juneteenth.” Antoni Gaudí labored 43 years on the Sagrada Família basilica in Barcelona, but construction continues today. And in the annals of grand quixotica, Ehsan Yarshater also deserves a prominent chapter.

At 53, he embarked on his magnum opus, a definitive encyclopedia of Iranian history and culture. At 75, he started looking for a successor. He didn’t find one so he kept going himself. Now he’s 91. He’s up to “K.”

“My mission is to finish the encyclopedia,” he said recently from his office at Columbia University’s Center for Iranian Studies. He knows he won’t be able to do it personally, especially since the task keeps expanding as progress is made. There are topics to be added and entries to be updated. So Mr. Yarshater has tried to make sure the work will continue by establishing a private foundation with a $12 million endowment and finally choosing three scholars to replace him as general editor.

Suggestions to improve BPP’s info regarding paidust in Mumbai

The Bombay Parsi Panchayat has been posting paidust information in Mumbai on their website http://bpppaidust.in effective 03-Jul-2009. Though this information has been a valuable resource, it suffers from the following deficiencies:

(a)  Detailed information is not available for the period 03-Jul-2009 to 16-Dec-2009.

(b)  The ‘select’ function provides an alphabetical listing based on first names of the deceased whereas it would be more appropriate if this were based on surnames of the deceased. I have compiled the most relevant information, sourced from http://bpppaidust.in using the above mentioned guidelines and have attached the same to this message. I request you to post this on your blogpost with the hope that authorities at Bombay Parsi Panchayat will take notice and effect remedial action at the earliest.

Can we revive the Dokhma at Surat ?

Dear Friends,

These are a few snaps of our Dokhma at village Damka near Hazira, Dist Surat, (About 20 Kms from Surat city) which had been built in the year 1915. It is really constructed in a very scientific way.   Today it is just a history, as it is lying unused on a barren land, which ofcourse can be revived with a little refurbishment and plantations around.   The area is thriving with good number of vultures, moreover the Nature Club Surat,(www.natureclubsurat.org)  is working hard since 2005 on vulture conservation project and have attained success by increasing its population.    Why can’t we parsis extend a helping hand to the nature club to increase vulture population in its natural habitat and revive this dokhma in its real sense by reviving the missing component of the system “Vultures” ?

An Eye Opener

To all of us who hold our heads up high and are proud of being a Zarthosti.

I happen to stumble upon some documentaries on you tube and have had a reality check. Below are links to them and I urge each one of you to watch them from start to end and not stop halfway. At first, that is what I did myself, I couldn’t watch them and found them extremely disturbing and depressing. But soon my slumbering conscience realised that the people in these films are in that state today, because Zarthosti’s like me have turned a blind eye to them. I sat and watched them again and this time did not stop halfway.

It opened my eyes how we consider us Zarthosti’s a privileged lot and put on our blinkers of prosperity. We have not only ignored the less fortunate but also ignored those remote places where our forefathers were born and brought up. We have forgotten that we owe our privileged existence in the cities of India and the World, to these less known and forgotten parts on India that we have abandoned. Being such a wealthy community and considering that we are just a handful, we have failed to look after our elderly and the less fortunate.

These videos have made me realise that poverty and loneliness are two of the hardest circumstances that a person has to face in their lifetime. The people in these videos are faced with both.

So I have made a pledge to myself that wherever I shall travel in India I will track at least one needy Zarthosti every time and to whatever I can in my capacity to help, be it financial or spend some time to ease their loneliness. Rather than worrying about our dwindling numbers, think its time we help the ones in existence that need help.

I urge each one of you who receives this to do the same. It is only after easing the troubles of our fellow needy Zarthosti, we can bask in the glory of being one.
