Protecting Vultures, and an Ancient Religion

In a small green building in a forest clearing in the north Indian state of Haryana, Dr. Vibhu Prakash scans through CCTV images searching for evidence that could eventually help secure the future of an ancient burial rite.

He’s looking for signs that the vultures in the closely monitored aviary next door are preparing to breed.

For almost three thousand years, Parsis, or Zoroastrians as they are known outside India, have relied on vultures in their funereal practice of “dokhmenashini,” in which the bird consumes the bodies of the dead.

But after the Indian vulture population slumped 99%, from about 40 million in the 1980s to less than 100,000 in 2007, the tradition of sky burial in Towers of Silence – the concentric circles where Parsis place their dead to be eaten by birds of prey — is under threat. Despite the use of solar concentrators to desiccate the corpses, as well as help from other birds such as kites and crows to consume the flesh, the process is much less efficient without vultures.

Brinjal Capsicum salan – Parsi Veg Delight

Believe it or not, Parsis do have quite a few vegetarian dishes that are quite traditional. Recently friends of mine attended a Parsi dinner in Delhi and the vegetarian menu described to me left me quite disappointed. That’s when I decided to explore the vegetarian fare that is regularly cooked in many Parsi households, quite defying the general perception that Parsis have no clue about vegetarian food.

Brinjal Capsicum salan is a lightly spiced medley of just brinjals and capsicums. This combination of vegetables quite surprised me when I first encountered it, but it actually works very well and is one of my favourite Parsi vegetarian preparations. It’s easy to put together and is perfect for a light summer meal with rotis.

Mazra Kalantar (Yazd,Iran)

This site is opened with the intention of helping to bring closer together Zoroastrians, particularly those of Mazra-e Kalantar origin.  Our history has been full of hardships and storms and through these hardships we have learned to keep united.  The inhabitants of Mazra-e Kalantar have gradually scattered and settled in different parts of the world, and rarely find the chance to be in touch with other inhabitants and keep abreast with news from this village. We hope that this site will make it easier to be informed of each other and to update news from our village.  Though it is just a start, we are sure that with the help of each other we will make our site more efficient.  Special thanks to Fariborz Jamshid Jamshidi, who was the initiator of this thought and to Ardeshir Farokh Jamshidi for taking the first steps to open this site.  May our love and faith for our motherland and rich culture be strengthened and last forever.

Last date meant to be wed. 25th so try to give it in before that.

And pass this on to anyone else you know who might be interested.

Basic Zarathushti Prayers

Dear fellow Zarathustis,

A website at the request of a few parents whose children have reached the age when they can start reciting our prayers. It will be beneficial to our young Zarathusti children who are preparing to learn their daily prayers for their navjote ceremony.

Please click on the link to access my website: https://sites.google.com/site/ZarathushtiPrayers/

On the left are links to the basic prayers which are recited at a slower pace so the child can catch the proper pronunciations. On the right are the same prayers and a few more recited at a regular pace.  Please feel free to download the prayers you need and also pass this along to others who are unaware of this website. Hope you will find this website useful.
