Rohinton Mistry wins 2012 American Nobel

Critically acclaimed Indian-Canadian writer Rohinton Mistry has been selected as the winner of the 2012 Neustadt International Prize for Literature.

The $50,000 Neustadt Prize, awarded every two years, is the only international literary award for which poets, playwrights and novelists are given equal consideration.
Robert Con Davis-Undiano, executive director of international magazine World Literature Today, said: “The world will quickly discover the excellence of Rohinton Mistrys luminous fiction that the Neustadt jury acknowledged with this choice. Giving the award to Mistry is inspired.”
Mistry is the author of three novels: Such a Long Journey (1991), which won the Commonwealth Writers Prize (Overall Winner, Best Book), A Fine Balance (1996) and Family Matters (2002).
His latest book, The Scream, was illustrated by Tony Urquhart (2008).
The Neustadt Prize is widely considered to be the most prestigious international prize after the Nobel Prize in Literature and, in fact, is often referred to as the ‘American Nobel’ because of its record of 28 laureates, candidates or jurors who in the past 41 years have been awarded Nobel Prizes following their involvement with the Neustadt Prize.

Looking for contacts

Hi

I am an architecture student at the University of Westminster and I am writing about the first Sri Lankan architect, Minnette de Silva. I have been awarded the Young Researchers Grant from the Fondation Le Corbusier in Paris to investigate her early work and education.
She worked as an apprentice with Mistry and Bhedwar architects in Bombay in the 40’s and was very good friends with Minoo and Perin Mistry after being introduced to them by the Khataus and Desais. She then went on to study at the Architectural Academy and then the JJ School.
I hope to meet Cyrus Jhabvala in NY but unfortunately he is unwell. I was wondering whether it would be possible to speak to someone from the Mistry, Khatau, Billimoria, Masani, Barucha families as she kept in touch with all her friends in India. I would like to know any information about Phiroze Mistry as I can’t seem to find any.
Thank you for your attention and I look forward to hearing from you shortly.
Kind Regards

Parsi Wedding Rituals In India

A Parsi wedding is called Lagan and it takes place with great enthusiasm. The traditions and the rituals that are observed in a Parsi wedding are quite different from that of a Hindu marriage. These rituals are interesting and full of excitement. Though the customs are very simple but the Parsi people get the full scope of enjoyment on their wedding. The rituals in a Parsi marriage are extended beyond a week. It can be divided under pre-wedding, marriage day and post-wedding ceremonies.

Sarosh Kapadia – Hon. Chief Justice of India

Sarosh Homi Kapadia – Pilgrim of Justice
Age:
64
Profile: Chief Justice of India. In his long legal career, he has served as a lawyer at Bombay Bar, a Bombay High Court Judge, a Special Court Judge, Uttaranchal Chief Justice, Judge Supreme Court
His Achievement

  • He is one of the finest judges and administrators
  • He has redefined judgeship

A judge, by virtue of his chosen profession, chooses to become an ascetic, distant from the society he lives in, yet immersed in it so deep that he is confronted with the rawness of its existential struggle every day. Chief Justice of India SH Kapadia is a person who understands it too well.

“A judge must inevitably choose to be a little aloof and isolated from the community at large. He should not be in contact with lawyers, individuals or political parties, their leaders or ministers unless it be on purely social occasions,’’ Kapadia said while delivering the MC Setalvad Memorial lecture on Judicial ethics in April 2011.

Appeal for Donations

D.N MEHTA SARVAJANIK HOSPITAL

J. N. Tata Marg, Lunsikui, Navsari 396 445.

This venerable institution was founded in 1915 as Parsee Maternity Hospital, popularly known as Suvavarkhanu, with capacity of 12 beds and providing for 40 days stay in the hospital for Parsee maternity patients. As the number of Parsee patients declined due to low-birth rate and Parsee migration, the hospital, in 1968, changed into D. N. Mehta Sarvajanik Hospital. At present, the Hospital has the capacity to treat 125 patients ably treated by panel of competent physicians and surgeons under the leadership of Dr. Zubin. K. Saklat and Dr. Harshad. N. Desai. The Hospital provides relief to Parsee and other patients according to its financial resources. Due to inflation as well as decreasing interests on corpus, it is difficult to carry out regular repairs and maintenance of the Hospital which will be completing 100 years in February 2015. The Board of Trustees make an earnest appeal to Charity Trusts and Charitably inclined persons for donations for repairs, renovation and maintenance for the Hospital structure. Donations are accepted in Cash / Cheque / Demand Drafts in favour of D. N. Mehta Sarvajanik Hospital, for which official receipts will be dispatched without fail.

Donors may contact Dr. Dinyar S. Mebta, Hon. Secretary on Mobile No. 09924195081 and Mr. F. E. D. Mehta, Chairman on Mobile No: 9821162957.
We await for your favourable response to our Appeal. Wishing you a very Happy New Year Farrokh E. D. Mehta Chairman Board of Trustees
