Dinshaw Tamboly’s Open Letter to BPP Trustees

The Trustees, ostensibly on the advice from some of the community High Priests, passed a resolution banning two priests from performing ceremonies at two Agiarys of the Punchayat, as well as at the Doongerwadi. This was done for the reason that these two priests were known to be performing Navjote ceremonies for the children of mixed marriages.

You will all be aware that in a very recent judgment dated July 07, 2014, Hon’ble Supreme Court of India has ruled that fatwas have no legal standing or force and cannot be enforced using coercive method. If you all wish I can send a copy of the judgement.

As a former Trustee of BPP, I feel it my duty to counsel the present Trustees that:

a)    The practices followed by earlier High Priests were quite different from those being sought to be imposed on the community by some of our present day High Priests.

b)    The ban on priests is an ill-conceived idea, not supported by any legal authority which during the tenure of the earlier Boards would never have been resorted to. The present ruling of  Hon’ble Supreme Court of India is indicative of how our justice delivery system views fatwas.

c)     Funds should not be used for this purpose – it is not within the remit of the BPP to become self-appointed custodians of the faith. The main purpose of BPP is to look after the poor and needy and not waste precious funds on such matters.

d)    The BPP Trustees should try to be more inclusive and keep the community together, not divide and cause friction within the community.

  • WHO AND HOW WAS THE FIRST HIGH PRIEST APPOINTED. WHO WAS THE FIRST HIGH PRIEST IN IRAN. WHY ONLY FOR MUMBAI, NAVSARI AND UDWADA. WHAT ARE THE POWERS OF HIGH PRIEST AND DUTIES

  • Kudos to Dinshaw Tamboli for his bold and frank opinion. His words of wisdom should be an eye opener for those blinded by our begotted priests who mislead the laity for their own selfish gains. And the community should wake up and realize how the BPP is squandering funds, creating rift and disharmony within our miniscule community. Mr. Tamboli’s views are like a breath of fresh air. But the polluted atmosphere of the BPP has vested interests and misplaced priorities.

    • to j gai, how could bpp waste money., they are challenged. what about other agiaries they can challenge them and get all they want, why harass the 70000 of the community. Nonparsis have entered our holy places and dared at it . Will a white garb make a priest. BPP action may be CRAZY but not S-T-U-P-I D. E NAFF is E NAFF

  • Kudos to Dinshaw Tamboly for speaking out and sending an open letter to the Trustees of BPP.

The acknowledgement and any reply received should also be published at the earliest.

Zoroastrian Legal Luminaries should take on themselves the task of informing the Laymen what is the position in law on the the above mentioned subject.

If necessary such right minded legal personae should be able to take up the challenge for the community and see an end to this long standing dispute.

The COMMUNITY must wake up to the happenings of the BPP and the so called Trustees.

Come Election Time every Zoroastrian Individual must ensure that the Individual who is standing for elections passes the test of Knowledge, Wisdom and Integrity.

The common Zoroastrian must learn to shun the FREE MEAL dished out to him. Measure not the individual with the yardstick whether his meal is better than served by others.

If unitedly the Community should boycott meetings with MEALS, the vibes sent out to the candidates will be loud and clear, that the community will not be bought for votes.

The Code of Conduct must be enforced to ensure to ensure fair play.

    Dear Friends,

I have been inundated by messages supporting what I have written to the Trustees of BPP on the above subject.

Whilst I appreciate their comments I think it will be best if everyone also wrote directly to the Chairman and Trustees of the BPP conveying their views, as the majority of Trustees appear to believe they have the backing of the community for what they are doing.

For ready reference I enclose the e-mails of the Chairman and Trustees; those supporting what I have written may wish to send them their views on the subject, under advise to me, to enable the present Trustees to gauge the mood of the community.

    • Sir,

I accept what you state to send a copy of comments to all the Trustees.

A one man one copy will make no difference to the die hard.

What I propose is a little different.

Yezdi Tantra is sitting on a treasure trove of names and ID’s of the who’s who of the Zoroastrian Community.

Let us harness that data to send each such person an individual appeal to download, sign and return to various collection points in our Baugs, fire temples, even the B D Petit PGH.

Given that we will get a 10 % response, it will still make the Trustees sit up and take notice of the collective effort in the struggle.

Let us all join hands for a cause.

        Dear Mr. Patel,
If individuals express themselves, their letters can be produced and used in court. They have more effect than a single petition signed by many.
        Regards,
        Dinshaw

      • Thank You Mr. Tamboly for your clarification.
I will get back to you with my comments,

  • Are the Present Trustees Worth Calling Trustees since they have been elected without any Code of Conduct and they used unfair means

  • elected or nominate. THE BAD MAJORITY HAS ELECTED THE BAD ONES. THE GOOD GOODS ARE OUTNUMBERED. WHAT SHOULD BE DONE. reverse the results

  • indirectly lots of people agree that if MONEY is involve what ever is the matter the culprit should be allowed to scot free.
