FACE DIFFICULT TIMES AND PROBLEMS WITH A SMILE SAYS MATHS MAESTRO

What is 93 square? What is 87 X87 X87? How many phone numbers can you remember without saving on a cell phone? For Mathemagician Minoo Jokhi; numbers are not just fun; it’s a part of life.
Minoo derives JOY to share with others amazing aspects of NUMBER CRUNCHING. Going back down memory lane in the past; in his school days and childhood days Minoo was the object of ridicule and laughter. Minoo was a Complete Failure in Maths almost all his school life. Minoo was a lonely kid. Also he was from a broken home and it was his good fortune that his mother Katy Single Handedly without any support brought him up so well. His Wonderful Mother has taught him to be a GOOD HUMAN BEING first; then a Successful One.
People normally avoid improving their weak areas. But not Minoo who made his weakest point his greatest asset.  To everyone’s shock ; he mastered the very subject where he was a TOTAL FAILURE.  Minoo was very unhappy that he was very weak in Maths. Being ridiculed by his teachers and all children around him; Minoo started to learn basic TABLES uptil 20. He would add and subtract bus numbers and car numbers. And when in his 10th standard; he performed his 1st Mathemagic Show and Minoo just went ahead from there.
Today Minoo can beat the Calculator in reciting Tables upto 1,000 and as such knows the Tables till 1,00,00,000( 1 Crore) ;Cubes upto 100; Cube Roots upto 1,00,00,00,000( 100 Crores); Square Roots upto 10,00,000; Factorials till 30; can add, minus, multiply numbers really fast and can remember over 2,500 people’s Date of Birth and Telephone Numbers and Mobile Numbers. Minoo can also do Summations and Prime Numbers Products also very fast.  Also Minoo have also memorized the Calendars for over 400 years from 1st January 1600 till today. If you were to ask him 19th July 1983; he can say it  was a Tuesday within seconds.
Minoo has performed MATHEMAGIC SHOWS all over Mumbai as well as in other places like Houston,Toronto,Colombo,Barcelona,Bali,Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Navsari, Lonavala, Dharampur,Chennai,Kolkata,Mayapur,Kerala,Chennapatna, Rajkot etc. He loves bringing a SMILE on people’s faces. He is a person of beliefs. He says to give your 100% and not to spoil your present by needless worrying. Also have SELF BELIEF. Today when the whole world is being pessimistic about Coronavirus and people speak of new normal; Minoo is an exception who believes the old days where IPL matches attracted huge crowds; Ganesh Utsav, Navratri celebrations, crowds at the Olympics and Wimbledon and Marathons and such events will return soon. Coronavirus is a pandemic which has no doubt devastated the world but no Coronavirus can break the resolve of a POSITIVE HUMAN BEING. Minoo also sees the lessons learnt in this pandemic like the good habits of drinking warm water, doing steam inhalation, maintaining cleanliness and above all not to take life for granted. He appeals to the Mumbai public that when Mumbai local trains start again; not to madly rush in the compartment selfishly without any consideration about others. In this tough times; he also acknoledges that we must be a bit techno savvy as the world is doing many things online but to never lose hope; the old normal and will surely come back. And to laugh and smile and stay optimistic.
Minoo  has come more than 10 times on Television. He has been invited to many prestigious schools, colleges, Rotary clubs and companies and institutions. He is the second person after General Sam Maneckshaw to be conferred the prestigious Honorary Membership of the Rotary Club of Bombay Hills South. He has performed more than  750 shows. Minoo mainly conducts classes in Memory Development where he has various levels of Memory Enhancement Techniques Courses and he taught students from the age of 4 and he has also taught seniors in their late seventies. He has been interviewed by over 100 Newspapers and Magazines and has written about 40 articles on Memory-Development and Vedic Maths in Newspapers He also teaches Personality-Development, Public Speaking and is not just a teacher but also a friend cum guide to his students. He is also a Numerologist and provides 6 pages Numerology Consultations. He is also an actor having acted in Nagin 3 TV SHOW as well as in Short Films, Drama and Webseries. He has won over 15 FIRST PRIZES in Public-Speaking; has got record 98% marks in Public-Speaking Competition held in Bombay Adults Education Association and won MR PERSONALITY AWARD in Personality Development at the British Institutes. He has also won Lawn Tennis Tournaments; played Cricket Matches at Azad Maiden and Cross Maiden as well as in Toronto and run 21 kilometres as well as 11 kilometres Marathons. He also is a LIC and GIC and HDFC Fixed Deposits Agent.

Minoo is a kind hearted and understanding person. He had a horrible childhood and knows how it is to be a child from a broken home. He loves his mother Katy the most and he also loves all his students and loves to motivate them. He does Yoga and Meditiation often especially Brahmamudra Asana. He believes in maintaining GOOD HEALTH and tough he is 43 years old; he looks like he is in his late twentees having lost close to 20 kg weight. He loves Maths Tricks and makes it super easy for his students. e.g. to multiply 34 and 11; write 3 and 4 in the end and add 3 and 4=7 and the answer is 374. For a carry over; e.g. 93 and 11 write last digit 3 and add 9 and 3=12; write 2 and add 9 and 1=10; the answer is 1023. How Polson made butter a commercial product in pre-Independence India

Polson butter had monopolised the business by the 1930s and become a household name in India, much before the Amul revolution.

Much before India became independent and Anand Milk Union Limited started the Amul revolution, Polson became India’s first commercially made butter.

Launched by Parsi entrepreneur Pestonji Edulji Dalal in 1900, Polson was initially a coffee manufacturing company. It diversified into the butter business when a customer complained that there wasn’t enough butter for the armed forces. It set up its first dairy in Kaira, Gujarat.

Dalal’s nickname Polly was chosen and given a British twist to name the company ‘Polson’.

By the 1930s, Polson dominated the butter business in India.

“The brand was well distributed and advertised. So much so that Polson became a generic word for butter around the 1950s and 1960s,” advertising and marketing expert Navroze Dhondy said.

Polson butter had monopolised the business and become a household name in India.

A unique taste

Polson’s butter was salty, but nothing to write home about.

So, the marketing strategy had to make up for the taste. And it did.

Polson started offering gift coupons with each purchase, which could be collected and redeemed to buy toasters or mixers.

It was marketed as butter that children loved. “Guard their health and give them the best,” the ad read.

Polson’s brand connect was huge, pointed out brand and marketing consultant Harish Bijoor. “It was about wholesomeness, it was local and Indians trusted and loved it,” he said, adding that Polson’s image kept growing until the late 1960s when Amul entered the market.

The competition

If in the early 1900s Polson’s competition was households who were making their own butter, after the 1960s it was Amul.

“Most housewives and mothers would churn milk to make butter, buying butter was an alien concept,” pointed out an advertising consultant.

The butter, with its not so pocket-friendly pricing, was targeted at the affluent and Anglo Indians. “It was almost like a status symbol to have bought butter at home. Mind you these were the days when few homes had refrigerators,” Dhondy said.

The downfall of the brand started when Amul entered the market.

Dairy farmers in the country were in a deplorable condition. Dairy engineer Verghese Kurien was entrusted with the responsibility of spearheading the co-operative movement that went on to become the mammoth Amul. In the beginning, Amul found it difficult to beat Polson because Indians were used to the Polson taste.

But Amul’s branding and quality was far superior and Polson was soon wiped out of the market.

Bijoor pointed out that part of the problem was Polson’s own creation. “Polson thought small,” he said, adding that the brand may be dead but its recall value is still “huge” with many Indians.

The little known Parsi Battalion in World War I

Received this as a Whatsapp Forward from a friend – source unknown.

Can any of our community members  throw some more light on this and share pics, if any?

Parsis, many hailing from Bombay, served as soldiers in Europe during World War I. A stone cenotaph at Hughes Road at Kharegat Parsi Colony commemorates the 46 known Parsi soldiers killed in action in that war in Europe.

During WW I, the Parsi Battalion was accorded distinct honor and privileges over any of the other regiments hailing from India. All Battalions from India had a sanctioned strength of 1,021 Officers and men, while only a few Indian regiments which had the status of Pioneer Battalions, had a sanctioned strength of 1,034 Officers and men.

Since The Parsi Battalion was the only fighting force in British India that was granted the same status as the British Army units, it had a sanctioned strength of 1,051 Officers & men. For all other Indian Battalions, the Commanding Officer was of the rank of Lieutenant Colonel (Lt.Col) but the Parsi Battalion, was headed by a Commanding Officer with the full rank of Colonel. Parsis comprised the entire range of Commanding Officer, other officer ranks and general infantry ranks, with no British officers holding commanding oversight over the Battalion.

The Parsi Battalion also had a reserve force of 551 Officers & men that did not go overseas, but were trained and stationed at strategic locations at Bombay for guard duty lest the War reach indian shores. 11 Privates acted as drivers for the horse-drawn transport. Battle experience also led to orders to ensure that battalions would always leave behind a number of men when going into action, to form a nucleus for rebuilding, in the event of heavy casualties being suffered. A total of 108 all ranks, consisting of a mix of instructors, trained signalers and other specialists, were to be left out. The number of men acting as stretcher-bearers was increased from 16 to 32, when battle action was at its peak.

The first two Indians ever to be awarded the DSO (Distinguished Service Order) were Parsis in World War I (1914 – 1918). Capt. (later Maj. Gen.) Cursetjee and Capt. (later Col.) Bharucha, both of the medical services unit of the Battalion.

The reason why not much is written or remembered about The Parsi Battalion formed in India, like the history of the other regiments from India that also took part in WW I. is due to the fact that the Parsi Battalion was the only fighting force in British India, that was granted the same status as The British Army, and were always counted as a British Force rather than a british Indian army unit, and all the records therefore were kept in England.

Unfortunately too, about 60% of the Battalion’s soldiers’ Service Records were irretrievably damaged or lost completely as a result of enemy bombings in London in 1940 during the Second World War. The exact number of serving Parsi Battallion soldiers is not known because of the loss of these records.

The Parsi Battalion was fortunate enough to be equipped with high power weapons, machine guns, extra ammo, & rations & supplies including woolen blankets, woolen uniforms, which was far superior in both quality & quantity. The heavy fire power they carried made a difference on the battle field. The Parsi Battalion was the only fighting force from India that was given more motorized units, were served English Whisky, and they were also given additional pay as they were considered a British Force.

Battalion transport consisted of 13 riding and 43 draught and pack horses. They provided the power for drawing the six ammunition carts, two water carts, three General Service Wagons (for tools and machine guns) and the Medical Officer’s Cart. The signals men had 9 bicycles.

Most men in the Parsi Battalion carried a Lee-Enfield rifle. Staff-Sergeants were also armed with the sword-bayonet. Machine guns though were in short supply at the time, but the Parsi Battalion never felt the shortage and was well-equipped.

Other battalion equipment, over and above that carried by the men, included 120 shovels, 73 pickaxes, 20 felling axes, 8 hand axes, 46 billhooks, 20 reaping hooks, a hand saw, 32 folding saws and 8 crowbars. There was also a plethora of minor stores and spares.

The battalion also carried a certain fixed amount of ammunition, which was replenished with re-supply, if needed. The supply per rifle came to 550 rounds per man. The battalion transport carried 32 boxes of 1,000 rounds, and each man could carry up to 120 rounds at a time. The machine guns were each supplied with a total of 41,500 rounds of which 3,500 were carried with the gun, and 8,000 in Battalion reserve. Food, water and rations had to be used very sparingly, until the supply was replenished.

The Parsi Battalion was the first among British forces to get THE LITTLE WILLIE, which was a “Mobile Fortress”, an early version of a battle tank.

The first tank was named “Little Willie” and it had a top speed of 3 MPH. Tanks received their name because the British tried to conceal their identity by calling them water storage tanks, hence the name tank. They originally were called “landships.”

Among the many inventions was the metal helmet. It was introduced by the French in 1915. All sides soon wore a metal helmet, and once again The Parsi Battalion was the first to be given the metal helmet by The British.

The Western Front, which ran from the English Channel to Switzerland, had over 25,000 miles of trenches, of which many battle front forward trenches were occupied and held by the Parsi Battalion.

To join The Parsi Battalion one had to be 18 years old, but some Parsi boys lied about their true ages and some were known to be as young as 16 years old when they joined the force.

Wonder why our military history never mentioned this aspect.

WZCC – A BRIGHT STAR IN THE SERVICE OF OUR COMMUNITY

It was in the last month of the 20th Century – December 2000 just before the onset of the 3rd millennium that a bright spark gave birth to a noble and Global Organisation called WORLD ZARATHUSHTI CHAMBER OF COMMERCE (WZCC). This shining star has been in existence since the last nineteen & a half year and has been performing successfully in the service of our Community.

It is gratifying to note that our worthy predecessors selflessly devoted their time, energy and money for the benefit of our Community at large. They gave us on a silver platter Housing, Educational Institutions, Medical facilities and many more facets of life, that too in abundance. Moreover Industrialists like Tata, Godrej, Wadia and many others provided the Community a honest means of livelihood for times immemorial.  We proudly salute them for their spirit of dedication and commitment.

However, besides these worthy benefactors there have been well accomplished individuals who have contributed towards making our Community vibrant and achieve economic prosperity. We therefore cannot thank enough the Global -Founder President of WZCC  – Mr Rohinton Rivetna, who is now Global President Emeritus. He with his foresight & along with his equally accomplished team established this Organisation. He laid a very distinguished and firm foundation so as to keep the spirit of Entrepreneurship/ Professionalism active and achieving milestones as time goes by.

The “Preamble” of WZCC world body quoted below gives an insight for all to understand the essence with which it was conceived.

“COMMERCE AND BUSINESS ENTREPRISE ARE MAJOR INSTITUTIONS OF HUMANKIND. PROFESSIONALISM, ENTREPRENEURSHIP, COMMERCE & BUSINESS ENTERPRISE FOUNDED ON PRINCIPLES OF GOODNESS, HONESTY, CHARITY HAVE BEEN ZARATHUSHTI HALLMARK RECOGNIZED THROUGHOUT THE WORLD. THE INTERMINGLING OF ZARATHUSHTI HISTORY AND COMMERCE DURING THE PAST TWO CENTURIES IS A CONSTANT REMINDER THAT AN ESSENTIAL INGREDENT OF PROSPERITY OF THE ZARATHUSHTI COMMUNITY ARE ITS PROFESSIONAL ETHICS AND ENTREPRENEURAL ACHIEVEMENTS.

WORLD ZARATHUSHTI CHAMBER OF COMMERCE WAS THUS ESTABLISHED TO KEEP ALIVE THE SPIRIT OF ZARATHUSHTI ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND PROFESSIONALISM. ITS MAIN OBJECTIVE IS TO ENCOURAGE AND FACILITATE TRADE AND COMMERCE, PROVIDE A LINKAGE BETWEEN ZARATHUSHTI PROFESSIONALS, ENTREPRENEURS AND FINANCIERS AND BE THE CATALYST, SO THAT THE ZARATHUSHTI COMMUNITY MAY REMAIN VIBRANT FOR CONTINUING ECONOMIC PROSPERITY, BY THE GRACE OF AHURA MAZDA.”

It is heartening to note that the above mentioned Preamble has been continuously followed with the same zeal and sincerity of purpose which was ingrained since it was formulated years ago. Here again we need to express our gratitude to one more extremely well accomplished individual who is none other than Mr Minoo R. Shroff who was also the Global President of WZCC and is now Global President –Emeritus. He is the individual who raised this Organisation to greater heights in all the spheres of its activities. In his tenure, the Global Community became increasingly aware of WZCC and its achievements.

Over the years excellent individuals have given their might for the growth of this Chamber of Commerce – the only Chamber effectively existing in our Community. Even now all the concerned officials have effectively contributed so as to enhance the basic essence so aptly stated in the Preamble.

  25. WZCC along with Fezana has formed “Zarathushti Entrepreneurship Development Foundation” – a new independent entity to enable Funding of Entrepreneurs in North America.

The aforesaid scenario indicates sufficiently the value that one could derive from such an ever active, vibrant and robust Chamber Of Commerce.

Any member of this Chamber can therefore have a very broad perception and gain immense knowledge, expertise, business contacts, networking which will ultimately result in actual increase in the quantum of his/her business growth, volume of customer base, which will ultimately result in improving the bottom-line – namely profits.

However, one should of course note that he/she has to take initiative and make efforts to grow & prosper. All the concerned officials, past & present, have given their sweat & blood and have personally contributed their time, energy and financial resources for the growth of this useful & prestigious Organisation. The members therefore can contribute further and in turn receive benefits out of their membership. In fact several members in the past have gratefully acknowledged the assistance they have received in various forms from this world body.

Coming to the most recent Global scenario, it is now an established fact that the Corona Virus will have a big adverse impact to all job seekers in the Corporate world. This has been well recognised and accepted by Industrialists across the Globe. It is therefore the right time for individuals to shift to the world of Entrepreneurship and become masters of their own. Opportunities are galore and will continue to grow. WZCC will therefore be an excellent entity to create successful Entrepreneurs and Professionals. In times of crises, like what we have been experiencing the world over, almost all business entities will certainly go for cost-cutting, will reduce their manpower and various overheads. They will have to, by force, think of innovative approaches to improve the quality of their products, supply chain, marketing network and add values keeping ultimately customers’ interest in mind. Unless this is done they will cease to exist.

WZCC, therefore, will welcome with open arms individuals of our Community, to become its Member, and those who are genuinely interested in expanding their horizon and become successful Entrepreneurs and Professionals. The present team of dedicated officials in India as well as in various Chapters abroad are well qualified, very well experienced and successful to guide and hand-hold its Members and lead them to their final GOAL which is “SUCCESS’.

HUMILITY

”State of being awake & aware of one’s surroundings”

If we can’t heed the humbling message brought to us by a tiny virus invisible to the naked eye, we will fail to grasp this opportunity to reset, reflect and renew and to work together to build a stronger and better normal. .

Everybody can be great, because everybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve…. You only need a heart full of grace, a soul generated by love.

“Hear with your ears

Ponder with a Good Mind”

Let’s bring Peace Harmony

Unity to all of Humankind

That was the message

Passed on to us

By none other than

Asho Zarathushtra

No matter what

Your status in life

Regardless of

As life is transient

Can’t take anything

Neither Titles awards
