Fire Temple in Kozhikode

Historically, a small number of Parsi families, primarily from Gujarat and Bombay, settled in Kerala, particularly around Kozhikode and Thalassery, where they practiced Zoroastrianism and built a Fire Temple (Dadgah) in Kozhikode. The Parsi Anjuman Baug, a Fire Temple, is the only Parsi place of Worship in Kerala, located in Kozhikode (earlier Calicut) .
Constructed in the 18th century, this fire temple is the only Parsi place of worship in the state, built when Parsi traders settled in Kozhikode around 200 years ago. A 13th-century inscription within the temple reveals that the land was donated by a Zamorin, highlighting its historical and cultural significance.
The Fire Temple they built, the Anjuman Baug, is the only Parsi Fire Temple in Kerala. Not many are aware of Kerala’s Parsi Legacy.
The Fire Temple is currently maintained by the Marshalls, the only remaining Parsi Family in Kozhikode. Though most Parsis have migrated from the state, the Fire Temple is a testimony to Kozhikode’s Parsi connection.
