Dikra, Rani toh papa ni!

If you know which iconic character said this dialogue, tell us in the comments below, haan! Now, let’s dive into the filmy life of our beloved ‘apro’ Bomi Dotiwala. Born and raised in good ol’ Bombay, Bomi wasn’t your regular banker! During the day, he donned his suit at UCO Bank, starting from the age of 19, but by night, he was a true Bollywood rockstar, thumping away on the drums. Did you know he had his own orchestra? He even played the drums for Bollywood hits like “Baar Baar Dekho!” Living the dream, right? And every evening, after finishing his bank duties, he and his darling Dolly would rush to theatre rehearsals because, as they say, “The show must go on!”

Theatre wasn’t just a hobby for Bomi, it was his stage, his stardom! The great Adi Marzban spotted his talent and soon, Bomi and Dolly became household names in Parsi theatre. They were on fire, performing in over 30 plays. Who can forget “Sagan Ke Vagan,” which had a whopping 104 shows? Adi even challenged Bomi once, saying, “Bomi, if you can cry real tears on stage without glycerine, I’ll give you one extra rupee!” And guess what? Pappa nailed it every single time. And remember that Raymond’s ad? Yes, our pappa was the original “Complete Man,” and even today, people remember him for it!

As if rocking the stage and ads wasn’t enough, Bomi dazzled on the big screen too. He left his mark in movies like Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. and Lage Raho Munna Bhai, but it was his role in the award-winning short film Teaspoon that truly stole hearts. Playing a paralytic father-in-law, his acting was so powerful that audiences wept, proving that when Bomi pappa acts, people feel every emotion. That performance didn’t just win awards—it won hearts all over the world.

And then there are Bomi’s adventures in banking! From facing down Harshad Mehta at UCO Bank to dealing with gun-wielding customers at the Dhanbad branch in Bihar, his life was anything but boring. But, fate had a filmy twist waiting for him. Director Rajkumar Hirani kept a promise made during a Brooke Bond Red Label Tea ad shoot and cast Bomi in Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. In one scene, to keep things authentic, Bomi actually let them pierce a needle into his vein to draw blood—dedication! And when the sequel Lage Raho Munna Bhai rolled around, Bomi was ready with a moustache, a boat, and a big smile. His Bollywood journey is packed with drama, laughter, and a whole lot of heart! Last but not the least- Carrom ramwanu, juice pivanu … majja ni life…
