NATURE’S FURY

Ravages caused by the Monsoon in Gujarat

 

 

Monsoon Season (June to mid-September) in South Gujarat is generally moderate with the average rainfall being between 1,000mm (39”) to 1,500mm (59”). The 2026 monsoon set in later than always with the region experiencing heavy rainfall on July 07 & 08, and thereafter building up to torrential rain between July 20 to 24 which has caused tremendous damage.

 

Some of the villages are still not accessible due to roads being broken and the receding waters, having left behind huge mounds of mud and slime.

 

WZO Trusts team of volunteers have presently been able to access a few villages where Zoroastrians reside and have ascertained they have suffered severe losses as the walls and fencing at their fields have been swept away or destroyed, paddy which is sown at this time of the year along with standing sugarcane has been washed away, grafts of recently planted mango trees destroyed, leveled fields damaged, other newly planted crops washed out, bore wells damaged etc.

 

At the present time Zoroastrians residing in the following villages in Vansda Taluka have been identified to be affected:

 

Anklachh, Bardipada, Bejpada, Bopi, Chasmandva, Choravani, Chunawadi, Dholiumar, Khambhala, Makadban, Mankunia, Sarha, Sirishpada, Vanarasi, Vangan Vansiatalao.

 

Over the next few days / week or two, information of Zoroastrians affected in many more villages in Valsad, Surat & Bharuch Districts will be available. The damage is expected to be on the same lines as those in Vansda Taluka as the entire region of South Gujarat has paddy, mangoes and sugarcane as their main crops.

 

Massive rehabilitation support will be very essential to bring back the lives of Zoroastrians residing in the villages on an even keel.

At present it is difficult to predict the total number of villages and Zoroastrian families who have been affected by natures fury; a moderate estimate, would, at the very least be of around 300 families x Rs.50,000 per family = Rs.1,50,00,000 (in US terms Rs.150,00,000).

 

It is clarified that the above numbers are based on estimates. Rehabilitation of some families may require Rs.50,000 or less whilst others will require substantially more. The total amount of Rs.1,50,00,000 / 150,00,000 (US terms) has been estimated as a mean average.
