N M Wadia and his foundation
“N. M. Wadia and His Foundation: The Next Fifty Years (1959-2009)” chronicles the extraordinary legacy of Nowrojee Maneckjee Wadia (1837-1909), a Parsi Zoroastrian philanthropist who established N. M. Wadia Charities to serve the weaker sections of society without distinction of caste, creed, or religion. Born to a prominent Parsi merchant family with strong mercantile traditions, Wadia became a respected figure in India’s commercial and social landscape, earning recognition including the French Emperor’s Gold Medal (1865) and Queen Victoria’s title of Companion of the Indian Empire (1893). Upon his death in 1909, his substantial estate valued at Rs. 88 lakhs was entrusted to carefully chosen Trustees with a vision to support marriage ceremonies for poor maidens, religious initiations, orphan education and maintenance, hospital establishment, poverty relief, disaster aid, and protection of public institutions—all guided by a core philosophy of serving humanity compassionately and impartially.
Over the century following Wadia’s death, the Trust’s corpus grew exponentially—from Rs. 1.22 crores in 1959 to Rs. 17.21 crores by 2009—through prudent management and strategic property sales, enabling the Trustees to expand their charitable impact across India. The Foundation’s achievements are impressive and multifaceted: the establishment of prestigious medical institutions including N. M. Wadia Hospital in Pune (1912) and the N. M. Wadia Institute of Cardiology in Pune (1966), a charitable hospital in Solapur (1934), and the N. M. Wadia Library of Music at the National Centre for Performing Arts, alongside significant contributions to education, welfare programs, and community infrastructure projects such as Malcolm Baug (a 35-acre residential estate providing housing for Parsis at nominal rents). The Trust’s institutional donations totaling millions of rupees supported hospitals, educational scholarships, religious buildings including the renovation of the historic Iranshah Atash Behram at Udwada, and relief for natural calamities—demonstrating a steadfast commitment to Wadia’s original vision of uplifting humanity while maintaining strong roots in Parsi community values and ensuring Parsi Trustees perpetually administer the Foundation.
