Abstract
The increasing ease of use of GenAI and large language models (LLMs) has resulted in an exponential increase in both interest and concern about the use of AI in higher ed. The ability to increase access, personalize learning, design individual specific pathways, provide 24/7/365 tutoring and assistance, and enhance opportunities for discovery and enquiry, among others, could not only revolutionize higher education at scale, but also bring greater equity and opportunity to all learners. Notwithstanding the tremendous potential ahead, there are significant issues that must be highlighted and addressed including those of bias, transparency and accountability, agency and even the re-envisioning of aspects related to IP, authorship, and learning. This talk provides a broad forward-looking perspective highlighting areas of opportunity and concern and the role that HigherEd must play in this fast moving asrea of technology.
