Call for Participants: 68th DPI NGO Conference in Salt Lake City, Utah from August 26-28, 2019

The FEZANA UN-NGO Committee is looking for participants to attend the 68th DPI NGO Conference in Salt Lake City, Utah from August 26-28, 2019. Individuals interested in attending the conference, are requested to send their resume and letter of intent by May 24, 2019.  Please send the e-mail to both individuals below:

While FEZANA, as an NGO in consultative status with the Economic and Social Council [ECOSOC]  and the  Department of Public Information (DPI), will facilitate registration to the Conference, the selected participants are expected to make their own financial arrangements regarding visas, tickets, accommodation, food, and transportation in the city.  Details about the vision, mission and activities of the United Nations can be accessed at www.un.org.

Call For Participants at the United Nations

The FEZANA UN-NGO Committee is looking for participants to attend the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) at the UN Headquarters in New York from July 9-15, 2018.

The theme is, “Transformation towards sustainable and resilient societies”.  The set of Sustainable Developmental Goals to be reviewed in depth are:

  • Goal 6: Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all
  • Goal 7: Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all
  • Goal 11: Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable
  • Goal 12: Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns
  • Goal 15: Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss.

FEZANA supports Sustainable Development Goal Number 14 of the United Nations

NEW YORK, April 6, 2017 – FEZANA, the Federation of Zoroastrian Associations of North America,  will participate at the Oceans Conference: Our Oceans, Our Future: Partnering for the Implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 14 at the UN Headquarters in New York, USA from June 5-9, 2017. https://oceanconference.un.org/

The FEZANA team will include: Rustom Bhopti, Sanaira Mondegarian, Behram Pastakia and Anahita Verahrami from the United States and Afreed Mistry from Canada.

There are 17 sustainable development goals (SDG’s) at the United Nations, all interconnected, so the key to the success of one involves tackling issues associated with the others. The 17 SDG’s reflect the traditions and beliefs of Zoroastrians worldwide.

At  the Oceans Conference, in New York, discussions will focus on  sustainable development goal number 14:  to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources, to reduce marine pollution, manage and protect marine and coastal ecosystems, to end overfishing, and to conserve coastal and marine areas.

Thursday, June 8th is World Oceans Day.  We, as Zoroastrians, celebrate the creation of water on Ava mah and Ava roj.  We give an offering and say prayers thanking God for the creation of water.  We urge all reading this message to join us in participating at the local level, wherever you live. United Nations Conference to Support the Implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 14: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development

Overarching theme of the Conference:
Our oceans, our future: partnering for the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 14

A high-level United Nations Conference to Support the Implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 14: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development will be convened in New York, from 5 to 9 June 2017, coinciding with World Oceans Day, to support the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 14. The Conference will be co-hosted by the Governments of Fiji and Sweden.

Zarathushtis interested in participating in the environmentally friendly conference at the United Nations, may send a copy of their resume and a letter of intent  by 1 January 2017 to both the following individuals:

While FEZANA, as an NGO (Non-Governmental Organization) in consultative status with ECOSOC, (the Economic and Social Council) shall arrange access to the UN headquarters to selected candidates, the costs of travel, visas, transport and lodging in New York City will be the responsibility of the individuals themselves.

This year’s priority theme is, “Women’s economic empowerment in the changing world of work” and the Review theme is, “Challenges and achievements in the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals for women and girls.”

International Day of Peace Youth Video Contest

Our colleagues in the Education Outreach Section of the United Nations Department of Public Information would greatly appreciate your support in mobilizing youth throughout the world to submit videos for a new initiative. Young people between the ages of 15 and 24 have been invited to submit 10- to 15-second videos in English on how the Sustainable Development Goals can build peace. The most engaging videos will be featured on the United Nations International Day of Peace YouTube channel. Some will even be shown at an official event at United Nations Headquarters in New York on 16 September.

The International Day of Peace falls on 21 September. Every year on this day, the United Nations calls on the people of the world to remember their common humanity and join together to build a future free of strife. The theme for 2016, “The Sustainable Development Goals: Building Blocks for Peace”, highlights how ending poverty, protecting the planet and ensuring prosperity for everyone, all contribute to global harmony. The 17 Sustainable Development Goals were unanimously adopted by the 193 Member States of the United Nations at a historic summit in September 2015.

Sanaya Bharucha on UN Education Commission Youth Panel

We are thrilled to announce that Teach For Lebanon CEO, Salyne El Samarany, and Teach For India Manager of Student Leadership, Sanaya Bharucha, have both been nominated by the International Commission on Financing Global Education Opportunity (the Education Commission) to serve as members of its Youth Panel.

The Education Commission, chaired by the UN’s Special Envoy for Global Education, Gordon Brown, is a global initiative which gathers world leaders, policy makers, and researchers to develop a plan to invest in and reform global education. The aim of the plan is to recommend pathways to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal on Education (SDG 4): “Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all” by 2030. The Commission’s report, with input from the Youth Panel, will be presented to the UN Secretary-General at the United Nations General Assembly in September 2016.

The Youth Panel will seek to bring forward the voices of young people to the Commission’s work, mobilize support for the Commission’s activities, and promote its agenda for action in financing education. Kennedy Odede, a member of Teach For All’s Global Advisory Council, is the co-chair of the Youth Panel alongside Rosemarie Ramitt, an advocate for youth with disabilities from Guyana. Education activist and Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai will also serve as one of the 16 members of the Youth Panel.

In their role, the Youth Panelists will discuss the Commission’s work with their communities and local education stakeholders and solicit their feedback and suggestions. In addition, they’ll support and promote the Education Youth Video Challenge which aims to mobilize young people on every continent to showcase their ideas about the future of education in their schools, communities and countries.

We look forward to learning from Salyne, Sanaya, and their Youth Panel colleagues as they work to ensure the opinions and perspectives of young people around the world are reflected in the discourse around global education and in the Commission’s report to the UN this fall.
