SOAS Shapoorji Pallonji Scholarships

Thanks to the generosity of the Shapoorji Pallonji endowment for scholarships in Zoroastrian studies at SOAS there are a number of awards available for UK/EU and Overseas fee-paying students. These Will normally provide a contribution to fees of up to a maximum of £13,000 each year for the duration of the award. In addition, a stipend of up to £10,000 per annum (or pro rata for part-time students) may also be awarded. The MPhil/PhD scholarship is paid for 3 years. The MA is paid for one year (or over two years if part-time). Applicants should follow the following steps:

• STEP 1: Apply for your programme by 17:00 (UK local lime) on 1 May 2018. Applicants must submits a complete online plication for admission. Applicants for the MPhil/ PhD scholarships must have demonstrated in the research proposal of their application for admission that their research is in one of the following subject areas : Avestan language, Pahlavi language Persian language, and Gujarati language.

• STEP 2:  Apply for the scholarship by 17:00 (UK local time) on 1 May 2018. You must apply for this scholarship via this online scholarship application form.

The Tata Centre for Development Announces 14 New Research Projects, New Affiliation with Becker Friedman Institute

The projects, led by nearly two dozen UChicago faculty and researchers across six schools and divisions, will add to TCD’s robust research agenda.

Dear Friends and Colleagues:

With tremendous excitement, I am writing to share that the Tata Centre for Development at UChicago (TCD) has selected 14 new research projects to launch in 2018. The projects represent a total of $1.6 million in funding directed to outstanding research projects and will be led by nearly two dozen UChicago faculty and graduate students from six different schools and divisions.
 
It is also my pleasure to announce that TCD has joined the Becker Friedman Institute for Economics (BFI) as an affiliated center, strengthening TCD’s partnership with the Chicago Economics community. As the faculty director for both TCD and BFI, I look forward to expanding the depth and scope of work by UChicago scholars to leverage evidence-driven research to help address economic and social challenges in India. TCD is supported by Tata Trusts and we look forward to an ongoing partnership around this important work.

New Grants and Expanded Research Agenda

TCD’s affiliation with BFI will strengthen the University’s long-standing commitment to India, which also includes the University of Chicago Center in Delhi, the Energy Policy Institute’s India office (EPIC-India), and the South Asian Languages and Civilizations Department. TCD utilizes cutting edge research from across the Chicago economics community, coupled with resources to translate and disseminate rigorous ideas, to improves lives throughout India.
 
TCD has selected 14 new research projects to launch in 2018. The projects were selected as part of a months-long process that began with an open call to Chicago faculty and researchers in October, and culminated with selection by a majority-independent review committee and the Tata Trusts. The projects represent a total of $1.6 million in funding and will involve a multi-disciplinary mix of UChicago faculty and graduate students from six different schools and divisions.

The new grants will expand TCD’s research portfolio to include a wide range of issue areas: water pollution and measurement, climate change, education, air pollution, fiscal policy, human capital, land policy and more. In the tradition of Chicago economics, much of this research extends beyond the conventional boundaries of the economics profession and into areas where economics can lend new insights. Across all of this work, TCD will work with researchers to connect new ideas to policymakers, innovators, and entrepreneurs to ensure that research and pilot projects have real-world impact.

Staff & Leadership

TCD’s professional staff is located in Chicago and Delhi. We are delighted that Nicole Anderson has joined the Chicago team as U.S. Director of Programs. In this position, she will facilitate TCD research and activities within the University of Chicago community. Nicole brings energy and experience to the position, having previously served as interim TCD Country Director and as Associate Director of Talent and Program Operations at the International Innovation Corps at the University of Chicago, where she led the development of the strategy for recruiting top young professionals from around the world.

Ammon Johnson will remain with TCD’s Chicago team as Finance Manager. Aalia Khan leads financial operations in India, and Priyam Pandey leads our efforts related to training and education. Anant Sudarshancurrently serves as TCD’s Interim Country Director. I am happy to share that a search is underway for a permanent Country Director based in Delhi.

We will keep you updated on new developments as we undertake this exciting work.

TCS & Cornell Tech Inaugurate the Tata Innovation Center

$50 Million Investment from Tata Consultancy Services will Enhance Applied Research at University Campus and Accelerate K-12 Digital Literacy in New York City Schools 

NEW YORK | MUMBAI, Dec 4, 2017 —: Tata Consultancy Services (TCS),(BSE: 532540, NSE: TCS) a leading global IT services, consulting and business solutions organization, announced Dec. 4 a $50 million investment in Cornell Tech. The investment includes a significant gift for the first phase of capital development on the Roosevelt Island campus, as well as support for collaborating on technology research and expanding K-12 digital literacy programs in New York City.

In recognition of the gift, Cornell Tech has inaugurated the Tata Innovation Center on Roosevelt Island. The center, formerly known as The Bridge, brings academia and industry together under one roof to share ideas and research on next-generation digital technologies and how to commercialize new areas of collaboration.

Tata Innovation Center

TCS will become one of the tenants in the Tata Innovation Center, a first-of-its-kind building where an extraordinary mix of cutting-edge companies from diverse industries have the opportunity to work alongside groundbreaking Cornell academic teams. They include recent Cornell Tech graduates seeking to commercialize new ideas and work with start-ups and established companies developing leading edge technologies and products. The building features meeting areas on each level, including a light-filled, multi-level Tech Gallery and a rooftop terrace sheltered by a solar trellis. The building was developed by Forest City New York and designed by WEISS/MANFREDI.

The new Cornell Tech campus on Roosevelt Island opened in September 2017, designed to combine the potential of academia and industry to create pioneering leaders and transformational new research, products, companies, and social ventures.

Winners of the Fali Chothia Charitable Trust

The Fali Chothia Charitable Trust is pleased to announce the winners of its 2017 scholarships:


Kashmin Dalal is working toward a degree in Psychology at Kent State University. Her ultimate goal is to obtain a Ph.D. and work as a clinical child psychologist. She has been involved in community service from a very young age, and last year went on a medical mission to Haiti. This year, she volunteered at Standing Rock reservation, running a camp for adolescents and children, and helping to build housing for their families.

Tanaz Karai is enrolled in the Master’s program in Deaf and Hard of Hearing/Elementary Education at the College of New Jersey. Ever since she can remember, Tanaz has wanted to be a teacher to make a difference in the lives of young children. In addition to participating in numerous workshops and been affiliated with organizations on campus, she has been a dedicated volunteer teacher at the Zoroastrian Association of Greater New York since she was in high school. She was awarded the Good Life Emblem Award from ZAGNY in 2013.

Dilshad Patel is working toward an MS in Exercise and Health Science at the University of Houston, Texas.  After studying classical Indian dance since she was 5, she became an instructor at the Shiamak Davar Institute for the Performing Arts. Her teaching experience led her to pursue dance as a means of therapy and healing. She has spent the last decade studying movement therapy—simultaneously incorporating its principles in new programs and workshops to help athletes, children, patients, seniors, and a host of other populations.

Khushmeen Sakloth, pursuing an MS in Chemical Engineering at the University of Washington, hopes to work as a computational or data scientist in the clean energy sector. She completed her prior education in India, always at or near the top of her class. She was active in various Zoroastrian youth acitivities in India, and is currently involved in several professional activities on campus.

Delshad Shroff will complete her Master’s program in Developmental Child Psychology at Columbia University’s Teacher’s College in May 2018. Delshad was one of two students who earned merit scholarships to study at the NY University of Abu Dhabi and has been an active volunteer with several schools and special needs programs as well as local Zoroastrian organizations in Chennai, India, as well as in New York.

Ferin Yazdani-Biyouki is seeking a medical degree at VCU School of Medicine. Ferin moved here from Iran when she was quite young, and remembering the sacrifices her family made for her, is determined to support her community as a medical professional. She has been heavily involved in the activities of the California Zoroastrian Center LA, the Persian American Society for Health Advancement (for which she led an effort to collect 30k to provide eye treatments to visually impaired individuals in Tajikistan), and the 7th World Youth Zoroastrian Congress.

The Fali Chothia Charitable Trust was established in 1988 to help provide scholarships and interest-free loans to needy zoroastrian students. Awards are based on financial need, educational achievement, and community service. The trust is established under the Zoroastrian Association of Metropolitan Washington Inc. (ZAMWI), and over the past 30 years has awarded scholarships to students from all parts of the U.S. and Canada.

To demonstrate solidarity and trust between organizations while serving community causes, the U.S. Chapter of the World Zoroastrian Organisation is once again joining the Fali Chothia Trust’s Scholarship Program by adding up to fifty percent to every scholarship we give from our trust’s resources. This partnership enables us to significantly increase the amount of our scholarships. The trust is grateful to the WZO U.S. Chapter, and thrilled that its support is resulting in a significant increase in the help we are giving to our young scholars.

All donations made to the trust are tax exempt, and go directly toward the corpus of the fund. Individual members of the Board of Trustees absorb all administrative, mailing, and other fund-raising costs.

The hair raising test scenarios stunned the audience where in MONTEA replied to technical questions of each subject asked by the audience to the point and very rapidly along with it MONTEA also showed his dance skills, karate skills, cricket skills, badminton skills and many other hair raising skills. After the demonstration, The Harvey Excellence Awards Council announced The Youngest Achiever 2017-2018 Award and The Most Valuable Harvey Indian 2017-2018 Award under the special awards category for Ms. Monaz Gandhi who is the creator of MONTEA.

European Region Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Students (Erasmus) scholarships

India biggest beneficiary of European scholarship programme

 

With over 5,300 recipients between 2004 and 2017, India is the largest beneficiary of the European Region Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Students (Erasmus) scholarships for higher education offered by the European Union (EU) member states, EU Ambassador to India Tomasz Kozlowski has said.

“Since 2004, Erasmus was thrown open to third countries. Indian students have been the number one beneficiaries of this scholarship,” Kozlowski said on Wednesday at an event to mark the thirtieth anniversary of the launch of Erasmus.

He said that Europe was “an excellent destination for international students on account of the high quality and wide variety of courses on offer, the richness of campus life and the proximity to Asia”.

Launched in 1987 with only 3,200 students in its first year, Erasmus has developed over the last 30 years into a leading scholarship programme benefitting almost 300,000 higher education students per year.

“With over 5,300 students from all parts of India having received Erasmus Mundus or Erasmus+ Masters scholarships between 2004 and 2017, India is the overall single largest beneficiary of the programme,” a statement issued by the Delegation of the EU to India said.

It stated that while India ranked second in 2016 with 62 approved scholarships for masters and doctoral degrees after Brazil with 79, the number of these scholarships allocated to Indian applicants in 2017 rose by 20 per cent to 74, “representing 25 per cent of the overall mobility flows selected for funding in the period 2008-2012 in Asia”.

“A significant development during this period is the increase in the percentage of women participants by 30 percent from 33 percent in 2008-2012 to 43 percent in 2017,” it stated.

According to the statement, around 90 per cent of Indian recipients of the scholarship have returned.

Engineering has been the largest area of study (25 percent), followed by natural sciences (13 percent), and business, economics, and management (10 percent).

Kozlowski said that with over 50,000 Indian students, Europe was now the second most preferred educational destination for Indians after the US.

Stating that the Erasmus programme received support from the highest levels of the EU, he said that Federica Mogherini, Vice President of the European Commission, was one such beneficiary.

Wednesday’s event was attended by a number of Indian recipients of this year’s Erasmus scholarship among others.
