Wicket keeper batsman Mehli Irani, who is now 82-year-old, played Kanga League non-stop for 57 years! No one is as witty as Mehli in the entire Mumbai cricket circle. 20-year-old Karsan Ghavri joined ACC in 1970 and Polly Umrigar directed him to play for the Parsi Cyclist.

He narrates an incident. “Since I came from Kathiawad, I had the habit of chewing ‘eksobees paan’. After bowling the first over, I was asked to field at long leg. I saw a paanwala on the road right outside and I rushed immediately to him. For one over, I wasn’t on the field and nobody realised it. When I didn’t go to bowl the second over, there was panic. When I ran in with paan in my mouth, Mehli asked me: “Aree dicra where were you”. When I told him I went to get paan, the language Mehli used still makes me laugh.”

Of vision and hard work

Amongst the communities whose study has suffered an eclipse are the Parsis. The reason lies in the decline of business studies, but also in the decline of Parsis as a business community. Parsi enterprise played a significant part in the rise of modern Indian industry and services. Parsis were members of the Indian trading community before the arrival of Europeans, and gained importance from the middle of the 19th century, when they entered the supply chain of opium exported from Malwa to Chinese ports. From opium exports they graduated to cotton exports and then to textile manufacture. At the time of Independence, they were important members of the industrial and trading community of western India. They also had a strong presence in the liquor trade all over the country, especially in and around British cantonments.

Trip Down Nostalgia – Irani Cafes

When the Zoroastrian Iranians came to India in the 19th century, they had no riches and were in search of a better livelihood. Mumbai (Bombay), at that time, was already home to another Zoroastrian community, the Parsis. A couple of Iranians worked in Parsi homes as caretakers and met in the evenings to discuss the life they had left behind, and their future prospects. One evening, a man served tea to everyone and charged them a small amount. The result: A business was born, of serving tea. And this was the beginning of an Irani café.

Rooshad Shroff

‘Architecture is more than just constructing buildings’

June 16, 2008

Meet Cornell alumnus and budding young architect Rooshad Shroff. At the age of 26, he has already completed a stint with the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (now Ramus Ella Architects) in New York and is currently working with star architect Zaha Hadid in the United Kingdom. He discusses his career, personal achievements, the need for creative talent in this line and why exposure abroad is of paramount importance with Sanaya Dalal.

Tell us a little bit about your background…when did you decide to pursue a career in architecture?

I come from a family of architects, starting with my great-grandfather down to my father — and my mother’s an interior designer, so exposure to the design field was pretty much inevitable. My childhood was a continuous initiation into the design world, be it on family holidays or going to my father’s office, there wasn’t much of an escape!

In fact, when it was time for my brother and me to zero in on a career, my father was hoping that at least one of his sons would not take up architecture, but in vain — we’re both architects now. I remember when we were abroad and Dad would drag us to see interesting museums and buildings — at the time we called it ‘Daddy’s Day Out’, but I guess it was that initial exposure that got me fascinated with the profession.

The Entrepreneurs–City of London

‘Indian, Inspiration, Innovation’

An Evening of Fellowship

Cafe Spice Namaste, 16 Prescot Street E1 8AZ

Tuesday, 13th March 6.30pm – 9pm

London remains one of the most vibrant, successful cities in the world for business. Meet some of the people who are making it happen.

The UK-chapter the World Zarathushti Chamber of Commerce is delighted to offer members and their guests an opportunity to be among the first to enjoy an evening of fine food and fellowship with The Entrepreneurs–City of London, a brand new, vibrant collective of business leaders operating within the City. While the City is still the undisputed centre of financial and professional services, the emergent business within the City is much wider. Manufacturing, IT, design, print, marketing and sales are gaining a foothold, in many cases making an impact far beyond the Square Mile.

Join us, therefore, on Tuesday, 13th March 2012 at 6.30pm, as we partake of a networking dinner at Cafe Spice Namaste to celebrate this diversity, and in the style of celebrated Parsee Chef Cyrus Todiwala OBE DL and Pervin Todiwala’s famous ‘Khaadraas Club’ – with dishes prepared the way Cyrus’ strict yet generous mother taught him! It will be a smart casual affair with the opportunity for The Entrepreneurs-City of London Founder Member, Dan Doherty, Director of Cadence Marketing and PR, to say a few words about entrepreneurship amid the glue that binds us all on the night — Parsee cuisine.

A welcome drink, plus two courses and tea and coffee will be £35/person. A delightful offer, we believe, and so well timed in anticipation of Parsee New Year. Please book directly at Cafe Spice Namaste on 020 7488 9242 orinfo@cafespice.co.uk. We hope to see you on the night!

P.S. In case you haven’t seen it yet, we are absolutely thrilled at the wonderful review that Cafe Spice Namaste recently received in THE NEW YORK TIMES:

Zoroastrian Cosmogenesis

Terms used in Buddhist, Jewish and other religions can be found in the Zoroaster religion, which is millions of years old. Zoroaster is the name title of the teacher. Documents on the fundamentals of this old Persian religion have been long destroyed. H.P. Blavatsky provided a glimpse of these fundamentals in the Secret Doctrine and Isis Unveiled, which serve as the basis for today’s presentation.
