A Zoroastrian’s walk through Wall Street

By Nina Godiwalla
author

“What?!” is usually the response I get when I explain I’m Zoroastrian. It’s that vocabulary word you may have learned in your seventh-grade history class when you read about the world’s oldest monotheistic religion. It makes sense that it is not a commonly referenced word since you don’t run into Zoroastrians as often as you would during Cyrus the Great’s Persian Empire. Growing up, my parents and community stressed the importance of economic success and prestige. So when I had the privilege to work on Wall Street, the epitome of the American dream–I was sold. It wasn’t something that people like me – second-generation, middle-class immigrants from the Texas public school system – got the opportunity to do.
